Run the installer and upgrade to the latest version of OS X.Once OS X downloads, you have two options.

If you have installed OS X and it is not the latest version, you may want run the App Store application to download the latest version. Before installing OS X, you may need to run the Disk Utility to create a installation partition on your new drive. See " OS X: About OS X Recovery" for more details. You may be able to install the latest version of OS X that you purchased through the Mac App Store. From there you can at least install the OS X that came with your computer. Hold down the Command ⌘ Option R keys at startup to boot to OS X Internet Recovery. The instructions are the same for El Capitan and High Sierra with the only exception being the path modify accordingly. The example above uses Sierra as the Installer. What I have done is create a USB installer of my image and then put it away for safe keeping. Internet Recovery is also a bit slow (dependent on your Internet speed/bandwidth). If you didn't have El Capitan, you will have to upgrade to it once the install is finished. If it was Mavericks or Yosemite, that's what you will get. One caveat to keep in mind is that it will install the latest version of OS X that is linked to the account/machine. I have done this personally on several MBPs. You basically hold ⌘ Command ⌥ Option R to launch an installer sourced from Apple over the Internet. Can I just build in the SSD, start the MacBook in Recovery Mode and install OS X from there on?
Once I had spent the moderate amount of time it took to download the apps I wanted (easy, and freely) from the AppStore (or other sources), I was up and running.The answer is "yes." I want to install a new Solid State Drive (SSD) into the Mac. Reinstalling just the user installed all my personalizations, key chains, passwords, personal application settings, etc. During the install, I only asked it to reinstall my user data from the Time Machine backup (but not Applications), as I had never done a clean install of this machine since 2011 (all upgrades were upgrades) and hoped to get rid of any cruft. Once the drive was installed, I did a fresh, clean install of El Capitan. Most of my apps come from the AppStore, though an impoirtant handful do not (Adobe suite, Alfred) and I made sure I had codes and links to reinstall those on hand. I had Time Machine running "since forever", so I had a current backup of my machine and data. Fortunately, I still had help from a friend whose job at university was to build PCs for the labs.
The surgery took me about 30 minutes and was not quite as scary as I thought. I just replaced my HDD in a 2011 iMac with a 1TB SSD two weeks ago.
